Dansby Swanson’s asking price makes him an attractive target for the Cubs

The latest information shows that Dansby Swanson is a more viable short-term target for the Chicago Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs were one of the most active teams in the MLB Winter Meetings this week. They managed to secure the services of former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder and 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger on a one-year deal, and agreed to terms with former New York Yankees starting pitcher Jameson Tylon on a four-year, $68 million contract. Their most pressing need is on short notice, and they’ve been linked to every free agent in the position.

When it comes to the remaining shortstops available, Dansby Swanson is the most viable for the Cubs.

John Lund of KNBR’s “Papa and Lund” in San Francisco tweeted his conversation about the latest news regarding shortstops with ESPN’s Jesse Rogers. In that discussion, the “last lean” was Swanson to the Cubs, with Rogers saying his deal would be half the cost of what Carlos Correa could sign.

Dansby Swanson is viable for the Cubs because of the cost

The Cubs have been linked with Swanson, as they have each of the four best players available. No longer an option, Trea Turner agreed to terms of an 11-year, $300 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Wednesday, wrote Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic in his recent article that the Cubs consider Swanson their “more realistic target at shortstop,” if they don’t go into a massive pursuit of Corea.

Swanson is coming off an amazing 2022 season with the Atlanta Braves, where he was named to his first All-Star Game and won his first Gold Glove Award. Playing in all 162 regular season games, Swanson posted a .277 batting average, .329 on-base percentage, .447 slugging percentage, 25 home runs, 96 RBI, 99 runs scored, and 177 results.

It may only be a matter of time until Swanson, Correa, and Xander Bogaerts all agree to new contract terms. For the Cubs, the feeling is that Swanson could be their stopping point for the foreseeable future, barring any changes.
